In November 1832, South Carolinas leadership met in special convention and declared the tariffs of 1828 and 1832 null, void, no law, nor binding upon this state, its officers or citizens. Sounding surprisingly like the Cherokee Nation in declaring its sovereignty, South Carolina forbade the collection of the tariff by federal agents and refused its enforcement within state boundaries
